HOLLYWOOD FOREVER’S DAY OF THE DEAD (DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS) ANNOUNCES THIS YEAR'S THEME "THE LEGACY OF POSADA

The country’s largest Día de Los Muertos celebration will pay homage on Saturday, October 28th, 2017 to the Mexican illustrator JOSÉ GUADALUPE POSADA  (1851-1913), best known for his satirical and politically acute Calaveras (skulls)

His featured work will include the iconic illustration
“LA CALAVERA GARBANCERA”, which was later renamed “LA CATRINA”,
an inspiration for many artists including Diego Rivera
and widely acknowledged as a symbol of the celebration.

"La Catrina has become the referential image of Death in Mexico, it is common to see her embodied as part of the celebrations of Day of the Dead throughout the country; she has become a motive for the creation of handcrafts made from clay or other materials, her representations may vary, as well as the hat."
– J.G. Posada

DIA DE LOS MUERTOS is a lively celebration
that honors heritage, regardless of age, race, culture or creed.

The dead are awakened from their eternal sleep, to celebrate with their loved ones, and experience death as a part of the circle of life. "Death is democratic, in the end it does not matter if you are white, black, rich or poor, everybody ends up becoming a calavera”. – J.G. Posada

J.G. Posada reminds us that art is power - political and social speech - mass produced by the printing presses and now social media. La Catrina asks us to embrace the beauty and grace inherent in facing our own death and those we have loved.
This four-stage festival, known for bringing together over 100 mind-blowing altars, delicious food, drinks, traditional dancing, curated art exhibits, and some very special musical guests, boasts a consistently diverse roster of entertainment, year after year. Previous headliners have included Lila Downs, Julieta Venegas, Saul Hernández and Carla Morrison. The festival’s 18th edition, will take place at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery grounds on October 28th, 2017. Admission for children under 8 years of age is free before 5pm.

Early bird tickets will go on sale, Friday July 21st at at 12pm PST                   www.ladayofthedead.com and Ticketfly.com
