As
part of the Television Critics Association bi-annual press tour, Telemundo
featured international film and television star Kate del Castillo to represent
the highly anticipated return of “La Reina Del Sur.” Del Castillo commanded the
center stage on Tuesday, January 29 at the Main Ballroom of the Langham
Huntington Hotel in Pasadena for a 30-minute “intimate conversation” with
entertainment journalists. As the most successful series in the network’s
history, “La Reina Del Sur’s” new season is a continuation of the
groundbreaking dramatic serial drama where Del Castillo returns in her most
iconic role as Teresa Mendoza, after an eight-year absence.
“I
always say that the story is the main thing,” said Del Castillo. “When we first
presented “La Reina Del Sur,” it was one of the first heroines that was really
an anti-heroine. She’s a woman who is flawed, and we haven’t seen that, at
least not in Spanish-language television. This is a major opportunity for
Telemundo and I’m very proud to be a part of it.”
A
co-production between Telemundo Global Studios and Netflix, the series was shot
on location in eight countries. Drug trafficker Teresa Mendoza had disappeared
into the U.S. Federal Witness Protection Program after bringing down a powerful
and dangerous Mexican presidential candidate Epifanio Vargas. Hers is now a
life of total anonymity in Italy as “Maria Dantes,” peacefully raising her
daughter Sofia in the Tuscan village of Massa Marittima. However, her life
takes an unexpected turn and she will do the impossible to reclaim her throne
as “La Reina del Sur.”
“I
wish we could have more Teresa
Mendozas on the screen, English, Chinese, Japanese,
German-speaking,” said del Castillo. “I’m proud to be one of the pioneers in
Spanish speaking television as a Latino heroine.”
Created
by Arturo Pérez-Reverte, “La Reina del Sur” is written by Roberto
Stopello, Juan Marcos Blanco, Miguel Ferrari, and Jose Miguel Nuñez. Marcos
Santana is the showrunner of the series, with Telemundo’s Martha Godoy and AG
Studios’ Rodrigo Guerrero as Executive Producers. The new season of “La Reina
del Sur” is a co-production between Telemundo Global Studios and Netflix.
Telemundo has the exclusive rights in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, and Netflix has
the exclusive rights for the rest of the world.
